More than a million vehicles were stolen in the United States last year, according to a new analysis by the National Insurance Crime Bureau — marking a 7% increase from 2021. Total monthly thefts nationwide country consistently exceeds 75,000 by 2022.
The total estimated value of 1,001,967 reported thefts amounts to $8.9 billion.
Vehicle theft data provided by the National Crime Information Center and analyzed by the NICB shows that more than 250,000 thefts were reported in the fourth quarter of 2022 alone. NICB analysis shows the United States Ky saw the highest number of car thefts since 2008, when 1.05 million vehicles were reported stolen.
For a recent comparison, according to NICB data, 937,976 vehicles were reported stolen in 2021; a total of 888,011 auto thefts reported in 2020 and 801,023 auto thefts reported in 2019.

The analysis shows that California and Texas lead the nation with the most number of reported stolen vehicles in 2022. Illinois had the largest increase of any state in the top 10 with estimated thefts. increased by about 35% from 2021 to 2022. Similarly, car thefts increased by 31% in Washington state during the same period.
“We are seeing an unprecedented number of vehicle thefts in almost 15 years, and there is little to prevent criminals from committing these acts as they are just property crimes, such as shoplifting,” said David J. Glawe, President and CEO of the National Insurance Crime Bureau. “We must reinvest in local law enforcement, provide needed resources for community police and prosecution programs, and implement early intervention programs due to high crime rates. minors involved in high vehicle theft.”
